The New Babysitter: Smartphones

By Kyle Davis

Hot Wheels, dolls, coloring books and iPhones. Everything a kid needs.

Parents are handing their children their smartphones more and more in order to entertain them, and the phone companies are catching on to this trend, CNN.com reported. The story reported the Joan Ganz Cooney Center found that out of the 100 highest selling educational apps on the iTunes App Store, nearly half of these apps were catered to kids just old enough to be in preschool or elementary school.

Kids that age are naturally drawn to the phones and the apps because of the colors and touch screen, the story said.

This is not the first time technology has been used to entertain children. Radios, televisions and computers have all played the role of surrogate babysitter, smartphones are just the latest creation to take on the responsibility.

At least if kids are going to be spending so much time on these phones, apps are being created that are educational, as well as entertaining.
